Welcome to a New Era of Connectivity

The time to upgrade is now

The telecoms industry is on the brink of a major transformation, as the WLR (Wholesale Line Rental) switch-off nears completion. This milestone marks the end of the UK’s copper-based Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). While in the short run, this can seem like a looming challenge, it’s also an opportunity to embrace the future of communication.

Now is the time for residential customers and businesses to take action to ensure uninterrupted services and future-ready connectivity.

So, are you ready to make the switch?

Connectivity

What is the WLR Switch-Off?

By January 2027, all WLR-based services will be fully withdrawn and must be replaced with alternative connectivity solutions to avoid service disruptions. This means that traditional copper-based voice and broadband services will no longer be supported. Instead, businesses will have to transition to future-proof connectivity products (i.e. MPF, SOGEA, FTTP) and if required overlay all-IP based technologies, such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).

For many residential customers and businesses, this shift involves more than just upgrading connectivity products – it involves modernising legacy devices and systems that depend on copper technologies. While the transition can feel challenging, it also presents a significant opportunity to embrace faster, more resilient, future proof, and scalable connectivity solutions that match up to increasingly digital-heavy customer and business needs.

WLR SWITCH-OFF

Understanding the Copper Phase-out

The WLR switch-off is part of Openreach’s broader Copper Retirement programme and supports their ambitious rollout of Fibre-To-The-Premises (FTTP), targeting 25 million premises by December 2026 and 30 million by 2030*.

Exploring the options

At PXC, we’re committed to both guiding and supporting you and your customers through the complexities of this transition. Whether your customers or businesses are ready to embrace full-fibre solutions or need more time to adapt, we’ve got tailored solutions to meet all your customers’ needs.

SOLUTIONS TO BRIDGE THE GAP

Metallic Path Facility (MPF): A Reliable Interim Solution

For customers and businesses relying on copper-reliant devices such as analogue phone lines, telecare devices or alarm systems, MPF is a perfect interim solution and practical bridge to the future.

What is MPF?

MPF allows customers and businesses to continue using their existing copper infrastructure while planning and implementing their upgrade to a Future Fibre solution. It supports traditional voice and broadband between your customers’ premises and the local exchange across a copper connection and is unaffected by the 2027 WLR Switch-off.

Why choose MPF?

  • Perfect for legacy devices reliant on copper

  • Avoids immediate capital expenses for SOGEA compatibility and new systems

  • Ensures operational continuity for critical systems

  • Offering an interim solution for customers and businesses who are not yet in a SOGEA or FTTP ready area.
